SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A UC San Diego-based international research consortium that studies chronic lymphocytic leukemia received a five-year, $20 million contract renewal from the National Cancer Institute Thursday.

The funding will pay for continued studies into the incurable and most common form of leukemia in Western countries, which could lead to the development of new drugs and treatments. UCSD said CLL is a potentially fatal blood cancer that annually afflicts 15,000 new patients in the U.S., and treatments can cause life-threatening side-effects.
